I know I have a new book, when I have identified a major conflict I want to resolve. Once I start a book, I live with its characters until it's finished.
I get my ideas organically, from observing the world around me, and from interpreting my experiences into a wider spectrum.
Write only what you understand experientially. Write as if your life would be incomplete without telling your truth your way.
When I have a solid enough concept of a new book, it usually writes itself in about three to six months. Every writer is different. Don't worry too much about your timeline, but have goals. Mine is to write 1000 to 5000 words a day, but if they're not sublime, I delete with impunity.
If you're young to writing, don't fall in love with words. Fall in love with characters by remaining true to their personalities and logical development.
The most surprising aspect of creating my books has been how much they also create me.
